Ativan 1mg

Ativan, a medication used to treat anxiety, is the market name for the drug lorazepam. Lorazepam is part of a class of drugs that are known as benzodiazepines. These drugs work by enhancing a particular natural chemical’s effects in our body and, accordingly, affect our brain and central nervous system (the nerves) into producing a calming effect.

Being a benzodiazepine, lorazepam tends to be addictive while also being quite helpful to the user. The chance of the same is more in case of a substance use disorder, say overuse of drugs or alcohol or addiction to either or both. For this reason, it is suggested that, after being on the drug for some time, one should not leave the medication abruptly. This is because it may result in withdrawal symptoms (say seizures, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hallucinations, hypersensitivity, etc.

In any case, the medication must be taken only as prescribed to lower the risk of both side effects and addiction.

Suitable for:

Ativan (lorazepam) is a prescription drug that is used to treat the symptoms of stress-related issues and anxiety disorders. These include generalized anxiety disorder (excessive restlessness or worry), panic attacks, OCD and numerous other social phobias. Ativan is deemed suitable also for a short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety associated with depression. It may be used in combination with several other medications or, generally, alone.

Dosage and Effects

Taken by mouth, with or without food, as advised by a physician, the dosage for lorazepam varies from person to person. It is determined by your doctor based on your age, physical and mental well-being (medical condition), and response to treatment.

Based on the directions given by the physician, use Ativan regularly so as to benefit from it rightly. However, since its effectiveness in long-term use (more than 4 months) has not been assessed, a periodic examination concerning the effect of the drug on the body of the individual patient is recommended. Moreover, being addictive, benzodiazepines can also cause long-term issues.

For the same reason, it is advised not to stop using Ativan suddenly, since that may lead to the concerned having withdrawal symptoms, which include:

  1. Insomnia,
  2. Mood swings,
  3. Seizures,
  4. Nausea and vomiting,
  5. Stomach ache,
  6. Loss of appetite,
  7. Diarrhea,
  8. Muscle pain,
  9. Very high fever,
  10. Fast heartbeat,
  11. Hallucinations,
  12. Short-term memory loss (amnesia), and
  13. Hypersensitivity towards the light, noise, and/or touch).

Some of these conditions can be severe. It is strictly advised that you talk to your doctor in case you have withdrawal. To help prevent withdrawal, the doctor usually lowers your prescribed dose slowly instead of just stopping the medication abruptly. Withdrawal is more likely after long-term administration of the drug (anywhere between 1-4 weeks and even more) or in case of high doses or a history of substance abuse or personality disorders.

Side Effects

Being a benzodiazepine, functioning as an anxiety agent, lorazepam needs to be handled with more caution than any average drug because of its addictiveness. On the other hand, some commonly occurring side effects of Ativan administration include weakness, drowsiness, dizziness, slurred speech, feeling unsteady, loss of coordination or balance and even memory problems. These usually subside with regular and organized administration.

However, lorazepam can also cause several other side effects, which may be more severe in scope, including:

  • Severe drowsiness,
  • Hallucinations,
  • Insomnia and worsened sleep problems,
  • Thoughts of self-harm (suicide or hurting oneself),
  • Random, unusual mood swings,
  • Confusion, aggression and sudden restless feeling or excitement,
  • Drooping eyelids,
  • span style=”color: #282828;”>Vision changes,
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes),
  • Muscle weakness,
  • Upper stomach pain,
  • Trouble swallowing, and
  • Dark urine.

It is recommended that one get in touch with their physician right away once any or some of these symptoms persist. Talk to them if any particular side effect bothers you or if one does not seem to go away.

Warning

Telling your doctor what you’re allergic to and what not to is advised before taking lorazepam to avoid any serious circumstances. Other allergies must also be mentioned. Not informing your medical professional about the other drugs that you may be taking or have taken and your medical history increases the risk of fatality as a result of drug administration. The specific medical history that must be mentioned includes diseases related to the kidney, liver, and eyes and the breathing problems related to the lungs. Personal or family history of mood disorders (psychosis, depression, etc.) and/or substance abuse disorders (alcohol- or drug-addiction) must also be divulged.

Driving, using machinery must be prohibited since the administration of lorazepam may result in dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Alcohol or marijuana can aggravate this condition, so, you must talk to your doctor if you use marijuana.

Inform your doctor about all the products you use or have used in recent times (including herbal products, prescription drugs and non-prescription drugs) before having any surgery.

Lorazepam may not relieve older people’s anxiety, instead, it may affect them in an opposite manner, causing one or several of the following symptoms: mood changes, sleep issues, hallucinations, and increase in sexual interest and desire. Some of these problems may even increase the risk of their falling even with some form of support.

Like many other drugs, Ativan passes through breast milk and can affect the development of your infant.

Storage Instructions

Proper storage of Ativan tablets is advised so as to keep it effective for a long duration. Leaving the package uncared for also determines how the medicine affects you and might thus alter the results. This is because uncared for tablets may observe unwanted chemical reactions. For smart and safekeeping of the drugs, follow these steps:

  • Store at a controlled room temperature, between 15° to 30°C, and away from moisture and light.
  • Keep the tablets in a safe place, and preferably in their original packaging. Keep out of reach of children, since it can create serious health issues for them.
  • The tablets usually come in blister packs, which aren’t child-resistant. Use child-resistant closure as per the requirement to avoid unintentional use.
  • All opioids are liable to abuse because of their addictive properties and are severely misused by both the general public and healthcare workers, so, these should be handled in accordance with that.

FAQs

What is Ativan 1 mg used for?

Ativan 1 mg is a medication used to treat anxiety. As a part of the benzodiazepine class of drugs, it works by enhancing a particular natural chemical’s (GABA) effects in our body and, accordingly, affects our brain and central nervous system (the nerves) into producing a calming effect.

How does Ativan feel?

Ativan induces a calming and relaxing effect by reducing excess excitement and agitation in the brain. While this means that the drug may need to be taken more than once a day, a prescribed schedule must be followed to avoid side effects and to avoid addiction to the drug. Accordingly, Ativan will be needed to be administered for several weeks before showing effective results.

Can you take Ativan every day?

While Ativan is a safe drug on administration per the directions of a medical professional, long-term use may still cause addiction (emotional and physical dependence). Physical dependence tends to develop around a couple of weeks of daily use, making it a positively hazardous medicine.

Is it safe to take 2 mg of Ativan?

Yes. This is so because, based on the prescriptions, most of the users begin with a daily dose of roughly 2 to 3 mg Ativan for relief from anxiety. The course is divided up into more than one tablet in 24 hours. Ativan (lorazepam) is available as 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg tablets.
